Introduction to Hajj
One of the Five Pillars of Islam is to perform the Pilgrimage of Hajj at least once in your lifetime. This act of worship is mandatory for Muslims that are both physically and financially capable of doing so. The Pilgrimage of Hajj is one of the most rewarding and spiritual journeys one will experience.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing less than paradise."
Every year, over two million Muslims from all over the globe have the privilege to be able to travel to Makkah and perform this ultimate form of worship. It is incredible how millions of Muslims of every shade and colour, every age, every race come together as one and perform the exact same action, in the exact same place and for the exact same reason.
The history of the rites of Hajj dates back over four thousand years ago when Prophet Abraham [Ibrahim] was entrusted by Allah (SWT) to build the Ka'ba - the House of Allah - along with his son Ismaa'eel [Ishmael] at Makkah. In the Holy Qu’ran, Allah (SWT) described the Ka’ba as:
|"And remember when We showed Ibrahim the site of the [Sacred] House [saying]: Associate not anything [in worship with Me and purify My House for those who circumambulate it [i.e. perform tawaaf] and those who stand up for prayer and those who bow down and make prostration [in prayer etc.]."
[Surah Al-Hajj 22:26]
The rites of Hajj were reinstated by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) whose mission was to spread the message that Prophet Abraham [Ibrahim] and the other Prophets came with and established the law of Allah for once and for all. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) along with his 1400 followers set the example on how to complete the rites of Hajj.
